As the features editor for The Wilmington News Journal, Betsy writes, edits and manages a handful of the paper’s sections. Her passion is to provide her readers with interesting and important local content.  

She cut her teeth in Alabama, spending her undergraduate years at Auburn University, and then moved onto the Birmingham News as both staff writer and eventually editor. She moved to Delaware in 2005.

Speaker Series: Jill Swartzentruber Seeks Out Public Relations Connections

Jill is majoring in English with a concentration in Professional Writing and a minor in Community and Organizational Leadership. She is the publisher for her university’s fashion magazine, UDress, and a proud member and contributing writer to UD’s Public Relations Society of America (PRSSA).

Blogging is one of her true passions. She writes for Delaware’s The Odyssey Online and is a style guru for CollegeFashionista.

Speaker Series: Dr. Doug Tallamy Calls for Diversity

For this week’s speaker series, Garden Media was thrilled to sit down with a true garden rock star over lunch. Doug Tallamy discussed biodiversity, native plants and the future of the industry. 

Tallamy is the Professor of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware. He’s the author of Bringing Nature Home, The Living Landscape and an op-ed contributor for the New York Times.

He has authored 80 research articles and has taught Insect Taxonomy, Behavioral Ecology, Humans and Nature, Insect ecology and other courses for 34 years.

Tallamy answered questions and stressed the importance of supporting food webs, pollinators and native plants. He said we need to create living landscapes where life thrives, not "dead zones" that do not support ecosystems.
