Let’s start by talking about what is an affiliate? If you know this already, skip to the How Affiliate Marketing Works section. But if you need a refresher:

Affiliate marketing: a marketing arrangement in which influencers, i.e. affiliates, receive a commission for each sale they generate for a brand. This arrangement allows businesses to outsource part of the sales process and better tie influencer marketing directly to sales.

For influencers, affiliate sales rely on trust and authenticity. For brands, working with affiliates expands their reach, increases sales through affiliate partnerships, and shows clear ROI when choosing which influencers to form partnerships with.

The best affiliate content feels organic, aligns with your identity, engages your audience, and showcases your opinions as a thought leader.

Let's delve into how affiliate marketing works, best practices, and creative ideas to maximize your affiliate partnerships.

Influencers earn money when their followers purchase through unique affiliate links based on a commission structure. There are platforms that specialize in this such as Amazon, Share-A-Sale, and LikeToKnowIt, which bundle numerous payments and make tracking more manageable, or brands can have their own affiliate form on their website.

Here's a simple breakdown of the process:

  1. The affiliate posts a unique link to a product to their followers.
  2. Followers click the personalized link and make a purchase.
  3. The purchase is tracked and recorded.
  4. The affiliate is paid a commission based on the amount of purchases made through their link, usually monthly.

Brands: Best Practices for Successful Affiliate Marketing

  • Commission Rates: The industry standard for affiliate commission ranges from 3% to 15%. Examples include Madewell (10%), eBay (7%), Wayfair (7%), Walmart (11%), Amazon (4-13%), Target (6%), and Pottery Barn (7%).
  • Monitor Metrics: Regularly check the performance of your affiliate links. Lean into those affiliates that perform well for future partnerships.

Influencers: Tips and Tricks for Using Affiliate Links Creatively

  • Product Roundup: Create gift guides or product roundups featuring your favorite gardening items. Include affiliate links for each product.
  • Comparison Roundup: Compare different gardening products or plants, linking each one to its affiliate link.
  • Newsletter Inclusion: Incorporate affiliates into your newsletters by sharing a list of your favorite products for the week or month with your subscribers.
  • Social Media Platforms: Utilize link trees on Instagram and TikTok to showcase various affiliate links easily.
  • Blog Integration: Incorporate affiliate links into your blog posts, offering relevant product recommendations to your readers. A link tree can be a backup and help organize multiple affiliate links.

Using an Influencer's Content Checklist

If you're interested in using an influencer's content organically or commercially, follow this checklist to ensure proper usage:

  • Permission: Ask the creator for permission to use their content.
  • Commercial Use: Discuss compensation with the creator if you plan to use it commercially.
  • Monetary Incentives: Notify the creator of any monetary incentives attached to their reels or TikTok content.
  • Credit and Attribution: Give proper credit to the creator by linking to their social pages or tagging them in the caption (the first 120 characters or two lines of your caption).

Affiliate marketing offers a fantastic opportunity for influencers to earn commissions while maintaining trust and authenticity with their audience. You can effectively incorporate affiliate links into your gardening social media strategy by leveraging creative and engaging content. Always obtain permission and give proper credit when using influencers' content.
